Accident at the Chernobyl NPP and “Chernobyl Digest”

The accident at the Chernobyl NPP on 26 April 1986 is the greatest technogenic catastrophe of a world scale in the 20th century. Investigation of its consequences is of an interdisciplinary character and deals with interests of scientists, physicians, politicians, decision-makers, etc. Department of Scientific Information and Informatics has created the interdisciplinary information bank “Post-Chernobyl Effects in Belarus, Russia and the Ukraine” as a base of two projects: 1) Interdisciplinary Information Database “CHEDIBASE” and 2) Interdisciplinary Bulletin of Chernobyl Information “Chernobyl Digest”.

“Chernobyl Digest” has been published (since 1991, 1, 3–5 issues, 2 issue in electronic form only) as an official edition of the UNESCO Chernobyl Ecological Science Network (since 1992, issues 3–5). UNESCO organised some meetings in Belarus (in 1992–1998) where many scientists from different countries noted the absence of enough information concerning the results of investigations obtained by scientists from Belarus, Russia and the Ukraine. “Chernobyl Digest” has filled up this information gap, collecting information from a number of periodical branch departmental editions, separate brochures and books. Its electronic analogue is “CHEDIBASE” which includes much more information in comparison with the bulletin. References, contained in this database, will be more useful for experts (in catastrophology, medicine, psychology and so on). However, it will be more fruitful to use INTERNET technologies for development of a WEB journal “Chernobyl Digest International”. Advantages of the system proposed consist in low price of spreading information materials, their operative publication, possibility of organizing remote access to data and feedback with users, etc.

As a first step of this project we begin to place materials from all issues, published or prepared for publishing in paper form, on this page.
